Causes of Dandruff

Thursday, November 18, 2010

Dandruff is basically the shedding of dead skin, in the form white scales, by the scalp. Just like our body gets rid of the extra dead skin, so does the scalp. But when there is excessive dead skin in the scalp, then dandruff is caused. Symptoms of dandruff include flaky dead skin on the scalp, head feels itchy and tingly, apparent red and flaky skin, rash on scalp and so on.

There are many different causes of dandruff. Some people think that dry scalp is one of the reasons of the emergence of dandruff, but this is not always true. Oily scalp can be a equally big factor for dandruff. Oil forms a layer on the scalp, which thickens when dried and then causes dandruff. Other factors include cold weather, use of hair products, diet, stress, hormones and so on. Some of the causes are explained below.

Majority of dandruff problems occur in people who have dry skin. The flaky skin becomes prominent especially when the weather is very cold or extremely hot. People who have dry skin tend to have dry dandruff, not oily. Insufficient shampooing causes buildup of dead skin cells and oil, which eventually cause dandruff. If you fail to brush or comb your hair regularly you will find that the production of dandruff increases on your scalp.

Combing the hair aids the scalp to shed the dead flakes and if you fail to do so the environment will become all the more conducive. Another cause of dandruff is yeast. Certain people have a sensitivity to yeast which keeps them at a higher risk of developing dandruff. During the summer, people sensitive to yeast feel that their dandruff gets much better and gets worse during the winter. People with seborrheic dermatitis are very likely to develop dandruff in their scalp as well as which other various areas of the skin. This skin disease also affects the eyebrows, nose ears and so on.

Skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema triggers dandruff in people. Also, people with diseases like Parkinson's disease and weak immune systems can get this dandruff problem easily. This is also more common in people who have suffered through heart attacks, strokes and neurological illnesses. Dandruff problems can also be a reaction of hair products.

People who keep experimenting with various different hair products tend to have irritated scalps. Malassezia can be another cause of dandruff; This fungus exists naturally in everybody's scalp but causes no harm unless it overproduces itself. The oil produced by our hair is basically food for this fungus. This causes irritation in the scalp and then extra skin cells which die out and mix with oil, resulting in dandruff.

Diet is another very important cause of dandruff. People who consume less foods containing essential minerals and vitamins have weaker immune systems than others. Therefore, their skin cells are also weak and may cause dandruff and other skin problems. Lastly, mental stress can be a very powerful cause of such skin problems. It is believed that stress can weaken a persons body functioning which leads to such problems.
